The wonders of Bamboo - Great for the making super durable Kids Wooden Toys and the Environment

We've long been fans of Bamboo we even started making our own greengrub brand of handmade wooden toys from Bamboo back in 2014. Since then our love of Bamboo has only grown as we learn more about this super durable, versatile and eco-friendly building material.

The following are just some of the super features which make Bamboo an exceptionally good building material, particularly for Kids wooden toys. 

Sustainable - Bamboo is actually a grass and is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. According to Guinness World Records Bamboo can grow up to 91 cm per day. Compare that to other trees grown for timber and building with an average of only 2.5 cm grown per year according to Sciencedirect.com. This exceptional growth rate makes Bamboo a very sustainable material for making wooden toys given it can regenerate so quickly after being harvested. This means significantly less land is needed to grow the raw material, so less land clearing and harvest disruption, it is also surprisingly water efficient.

Strong - Bamboo is super durable. It has high tensile strength, and on some tests has been proven stronger than steel (see Engineering Discoveries.com), just what you need when your making wooden toys for the rough and tumble of Kids and little people testing their strengths, an ideal material for kids toys which will last for generations. Another great feature of raw Bamboo is the impermeable protective layer it has on the outer side which protects it from rotting as water is not allowed to penetrate into the structure. This is not so applicable to making kids wooden toys as we used compressed Bamboo sheet to make our greengrub brand handmade wooden toys. So we coat the toys in a protective natural plant based oil however in building construction this is a major advantage over any other organic materials.

Eco-friendly - another really exciting thing about bamboo is it's eco-friendly! According to Altenergy.org the most important quality of bamboo is its environmentally friendly qualities. It's a hardy, easy growing grass not needing pesticides and other chemicals in cultivation therefore significantly reducing chemical pollution build up and control resistant pests .

Did you know a Bamboo plantation can absorb up to 35% carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and turn it into oxygen?

As Bamboo regenerates so much faster than tress it can do some serious heavy lifting in helping reduce carbon levels to tackle the current climate emergency facing Us all, #ClimateEmergency.
