Why we started greengrub Wooden Toys?

As parents of a two and a half year old little boy we wanted to provide the best possible up bringing for him. This meant we started planning early for a future quality education and soon realised this starts with promoting the development of curiosity and play at early ages via Toys.

Children learn almost everything through play and the importance of letting them experience this from birth cannot be underestimated. So we put a lot of thought and effort into researching what makes a great play Toy. We found encouraging imagination, creativity, logic and problem solving through learning were high priorities. However; we found most of the large toys stores have a very limited range of toys that met this criteria so we decided to make some traditional Toys that have been proven effective and enjoyed by many generations.

As a hobby woodworker with twenty five years experience the choice was easy, let’s make natural wooden Toys. No electrical buttons, batteries or guides to tell children how to play. No nasty chemicals from plastics. No overstimulation from flashing lights or twenty different colours, just a well-made toy with natural colours, textures and finish. We have all found it interesting watching how engaged young children are with a simple toy haven’t we?

The fun and intrigue shown on their faces is priceless. When we gave our little boy his new wooden Toys we didn’t give any direction on how to play with them, just sat back and enjoyed his reactions. Every time he picks them up he plays with them in a slightly different way. It’s as if he works out a new or better way of playing with them.

His latest favourite is the hobby horse. One for him, one for mummy and let’s ride around the house. When we head outside he needs daddy’s Akubra hat to ride around the back yard like a cowboy. At mealtime we cannot forget to feed the horsey and of course he brings it to the bedroom at sleep time and puts him to bed as well.

The farm tractor’s been another favourite for a long time. He loads and unloads plush farm animals in and out of the trailer for hours. Unhooking the trailer and parking it under the tv cabinet using it as a garage. Then out it comes again and the animals are replaced with Toy cars, endless fun!

As well as thinking about play and education we are also big advocates of living sustainably. We think it’s an important factor in ensuring a bright future for all our children so using sustainable materials is important for us in our Toy making.
