Q&A – we often get questions from Customers about our handmade wooden toys so we thought we'd share some.

Q. How do you get your toys so smooth to touch?

A. We finish our handmade wooden toys in a unique way especially for the comfort of your little ones fingers. The secret is a “Swansdown Mop”! Like a rotary polishing cloth; swansdown mops are made from actual swansdown which is woven into a fabric placed on a spindle and spun at reasonably high speed. When something, such as a wooden toy, is held against the spinning mop it buffs or polishes it to provide a silky smooth finish.

Once we make our wooden toys for you we spend a lot of time detailing and finishing them to ensure they feel silky smooth and inviting for you straight out of the box. Firstly every toy is hand sanded until it is super smooth. Then we apply Australian owned, locally made all natural non-toxic wood oil. Finally we finish your toy with the swansdown mop to give the ultra-smooth feel your kids will love.

Did you know applying a coating to timber often raises microscopic structures on the woods surface? This is why it sometimes feels rough to touch after the coating has been applied even though it had previously been sanded smooth. 

That’s why using a swansdown mop to finish our handmade wooden toys makes such a difference to the finished feel of greengrub wooden toys.
