Plastic Free July – Spotlight on Action

The town of Bassendean teamed up with the local government / council to develop some amazing initiatives which have worked really well and talk about how all communities could implement and benefit from in the below video.

Here at greengrub Wooden toys we tackle reducing plastics in the environment on multiple fronts.

In our family owned online toy and puzzle store we ensure plastics are reduced as much as possible.

This starts with hand picking, globally leading wooden toy and puzzle manufacturers who are also passionate about reducing plastic in their products, packaging and supply chains. We recognise It's all of our responsibilities to ensure we only buy sustainable products and not those which may be the cheapest/ nastiest but are most likely not the safest and are definitely having a negative impacts on communities and the environment. After all our kids and future generations will pay the price in poor health and degraded natural environment.

Ok, enough of the negative stuff; back to what greengrub Wooden Toys is doing to reduce plastic:

  1. Choosing enviro-friendly, sustainable products and manufacturers as outlined above;
  2. In our packaging; we are down to approx 97% plastic free and striving to be 100% plastic free soon. When we do use plastic we ensure it's re-used/ re purposed plastic (more environmentally friendly than recycled) meaning we don't use any single use or virgin plastic.
  3. Buy in bulk using as much/ many raw materials, tools, replacement parts and stationary with plastic free packaging or recycled plastic content as possible.
  4. Use as much electronic customer communications,  marketing and promotional material as possible to reduce use of paper (wrapped in plastic) and printing (reduces plastic printer cartridge and packaging waste) which has material reduction on single use plastic waste.
  5. Bottled water is "Banned" within our business. Re-useable water bottles are used by the entire family in the workshop, office and when we're out and about visiting customers. Ban the Bottle- YES!

Here's some great ideas from Plastic Free July on what you can do in your family to reduce single use plastic.

Here's another really handy website with Reusable alternatives to single use plastic.

Well that's it from Us, it's now over to you for the Challenge.

We hope we've given you some good ideas to help reduce plastic in your family and offered some great plastic free traditional Wooden Toys and Puzzles to consider the next time you need gifts for the kids for a birthday, christening, Christmas or just a special treat.

Cheers
