Charity Spotlight - CCT Helping strengthen families and end the Orphanage Crisis in Cambodia

Here are greengrub Wooden Toys and Puzzles we've always been big supporters of charities and helping those less fortunate then ourselves. This month we shine the the light on a charity we have been supporting for close to 10 years, Cambodian Children's Trust (CCT).

CCT's Story: "It all started with an idealistic 19-year-old backpacker, a tuk-tuk tour to an orphanage and a desire to help vulnerable kids in Cambodia". Then in 2007, Tara Winkler and Pon Jedtha rescued 14 children from a corrupt and abusive orphanage in Battambang, Cambodia and CCT was born.

Many years on and CCT continue to use both common sense and innovative methods to tackle the many issues children in Cambodia (and around the world) face. As CCT's website website proudly state: [we]  "are now driving the care reform movement in Cambodia and setting the blueprint for what is needed across the world – a preventative approach to child protection".

In Cambodia, between 2005 – 2010 the number of orphanages grew by 75% and the number of children living in these institutions doubled. CCT promote Family Based Care Programs not Orphanages and envisage a world without any Orphanages.

CCT outline how they are tackling these shocking numbers; "Our work is focused on a two-prong approach to prevent and respond to the negative impact of the Orphanage Crisis in Cambodia.

At the heart of our work is our preventative child protection model that addresses the root causes of the Orphanage Crisis. It places families and communities in the driving seat, empowering them to meet the challenges in their lives and raise their children well.

We are also responding to the Orphanage Crisis by reuniting children in orphanages with family." What better way to help Kids and Families than giving them a leg up with sustainable help and not just handouts, hats off to the CCT Team, keep up the good work.
